One-step penalties
(Preview)
In the shoot-out last night, there were penalties taken with just a one-step run up. I wonder what the thinking is behind this. As it happens, Mensah took a very poor penalty. I know you can have a huge run-up and blast it over the bar but it's surely more likely to be effective than just one step?

Torres
(Preview)
It looks as if he's been taking the same medicine as Rooney, along with a few of his colleagues I think. The most likely final at the moment is surely Holland-Germany, although I suppose Spain might fit the bill of slow starters and then buildiong up strong towards the end- but I somehow doubt it.

Refereeing
(Preview)
It'll be disappointing if the World Cup begins to be dominated by poor decisions. I actually thought the officials did well on the whole through the group stages. However that Tevez goal against Mexico must be one of the worst offside goals ever, and I fail to see how the ref couldn't over-rule his line...

Portugal sending off

There have been some crazy dismissals in the World Cup, but this one was as soft as any. I would think that refs would have learned that if a player is rolling on the floor in agony, there's a strong chance nothing really happened.
