A man in Sussex has contacted us with a medal presented to "G B Young Carlisle City AFC 1896/7 cup runners-up".
I realise some of our existing members would only be young boys at that time, but it would be good if we discover a bit more about this. I started some research myself. Carlisle United were formed in 1904 when they changed their name from Shaddongate, and they were playing in a Cumberland Senior league then. The Cumberland FA was formed in 1884 and I wonder what records they have kept.
Jack Williamson had a story in the Cumberland News on Friday re: a medal dated in 1894 showing City as Cumberland Cup winners, beating Moss Bay.
Is there anyone out there who could look into this further- when was the original club formed? when did it cease? what did it win? where did it play? did the sheepmount still get cancelled on a saturday morning??
There is no truth in the rumour that Jack Ewbank was the original chairman.
