Details are emerging of a plan by Cumberland & Westmorland Fa's to form a new senior league, at Step 7 level. This would put the league into the national football pyramid.
One issue that's bound to crop up on this is facilities. Whether there are enough clubs in Cumberland and Westmorland with suitable facilities to play at this level is debatable.
Westmorland are joining the discussions I believe but there are not many clubs in that region with decent facilities- Keswick and Wetheriggs may have potential.
Im all for it personally,i think the county league should be exactly that, the (COUNTY) LEAGUE,ie CUMBRIA!!!!! Instead of west cumbria +a couple of others. I also think that the standerd of football would also improve as there would be some decent westmorland teams coming to join the party,ie Wetheriggs, kendal,Keswick ect. As far as the facilities goes,in my opinion clubs should be given a chance to reach a certain standard, possibly two seasons to try and get funding in place to reach the required level?? My worry would be how they plan to structure the leagues? who goes in witch divisions? obviously some teams will end up disapointed with certain decisions, but hopefully, with common sense and honesty from all clubs involved we will end up with a much more competitive saterday standard. Finally,if we did go down that road,i would love to see all our big clubs represented,do you think we could have maybe a Gillford resvs? Harraby Cathlic resvs? Northbank? I no that running one team is time consuming enough, god knows how you city boys do it with all your teams, and hats off to you but in my opinion this town has got the players to support such clubs, and with the players on your side,as we have proved, anything is possible!!! Your opinions please?????
The meeting took place tonight and City were represented. The geography of Cumbria is always going to present a problem. Travelling to Ponteland in the Alliance will take no longer than going to Windscale or Kendal County in a Cumbria league.
I'm surprised the Step 7 requirement for facilities are so low- roped-off pitches are sufficient apparently.
