City v St Bees
Permalink

The boys won 4-3 at St Bees to push themselves into 2nd in the table in a very eventful game to say the least,.

The pitch was very poor making it hard for the young City players to get it down and play their normal game, saying that I guess as the winter creeps up on us the pitches they will have to play on will get increasingly worse, they will have to learn to adapt.

Anyway the game started with St Bees kicking down the slope and apart from a couple of long range efforts neither side looked like scoring. However, two slip ups by the normally consistent City defence let St Bees in to score 2 quick goals.

Griffy hit the bar late in the half with a great strike that the keeper just watched, lucky for him it bounced straight back to him with Robin Ward ready to tap it in.

After some carefully selected words at half time from the manager Paul Henderson, the team took the game to St Bees and in no time were back on level terms, through Robin Ward and Lee Sturrock. At this stage the lads were more or less camped in the St Bees half and it looked like matter of time before we scored again.

However, with minutes remaining St Bees broke away and nicked one to make it 3-2. City then launched what seemed like the last attack of the game and amazingly levelled through Johnno Simpson. With everyone patting themselves on the back for such a dramatic fight back, the referee signalled 2 minutes added time. City regained possession almost straight away from the St Bees kick off and went in search of the winner. A ball was played in from the right and it sailed to the back post where Sanko was waiting, he still had plenty to do, but smashed a shot past the keeper to signal just about every city player jumping on him.

Great result in the end, but a poor performance, we must do better than that if we are going to be considered as championship contenders. That aside it shows the strength in depth the club has at the moment, with over 12 players missing from both teams yesterday. Well done boys, good 3 points.
